Report of the PRC

Doc. # 31, January 2002

REPORT FROM THE PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE

The horrific events of Sept. 11 shocked all of us, and brought into the forefront many of the issues we on the PRC had been discussing. What to do, how to make the most of the Amateur Radio participation and yet be sensitive to the main story - the thousands of lives that had been lost.

My role of ARRL Public Relations Committee Chairman took a back seat while as Public Information Coordinator in the ARRL NYC/LI Section, I was thrust into a situation I had hoped never to confront right in my own backyard. Obviously the WTC disaster took over our lives and continues to be a major factor in many areas, including publicity.

The members of the PRC were invaluable in their help and contributions towards the promotion of Amateur Radio as a public service during this time, while also using this experience to further refine what is needed by local PICs and PIOs. We got more firsthand knowledge than we ever wanted.

The PRC is working with Jen Hagy to put the PIC/PIO Handbook on the Web as well as taking a look at what is available for those in these positions. We have found that the most effective way to accomplish our goals is to focus on them in smaller groups. This we have done with the PIC/PIO handbook, which was delayed due to the immediate priorities of Sept. 11.

We have spent much time this year getting to know each other's strengths and areas of expertise. This committee was something very new for most of us - I don't think we fully realized how much there was to do - including reports, forums (at Dayton), etc., and how difficult it would be without regular face-to-face meetings.

Last year was a learning experience. We look forward to using the knowledge and experience gained in 2001 to be an effective PRC and appreciate the support of President Haynie, the Board and advisors.

Respectfully submitted,

Diane Ortiz, K2DO
ARRL Public Relations Committee Chairman
