Special Service Club Spotlight

Central Michigan Amateur Radio Club

ARRL Affiliated Clubs · Special Service Club Spotlight

The Central Michigan Amateur Radio Club, founded in 1921, celebrated its 50th anniversary of ARRL affiliation on 20 February 2000. Great Lakes

Division Director, George Race (WB8BGY) will be presenting a certificate to commemorate this occasion at the April 7th meeting and a Special Event is planned for 29 April 2000 from 10a-4p (Eastern Time).

In addition, CMARC reached a goal of 200 members in 1998 and are working towards 300, so they can shave the head of their President, J. Ervin Bates (W8ERV) and Board Director John Crawford (N8LLC). If you want to see the "Tutu Incident" of December 1998 that started all this, visit http://www.qsl.net/cmarc/library.html

"Non-camera-shy" members of our recent Amateur Radio class include, from left to right, the 3 Instructors (far left): Dennis Boone, KB8ZQZ, Michael Shanblatt, K8MAS, and Gregg Mulder, WB8LZG. This class was a joint effort of CMARC and the Michigan State University Amateur Radio Club.

A successful 6-week Amateur Radio class was the joint effort of the Central Michigan Amateur Radio Club and the Michigan State University Amateur Radio Club. More than 40 signed up for the class, which also taught Morse Code and we had a RECORD 35 candidates at the VE Session! Nearly everyone earned at least a portion of their entry-level license.

CMARC is a Club determined to make good things happen. During my 3-year term as President, we established bi-monthly VE Sessions, hold Ham Radio classes regularly, upgraded our local repeaters, and have redesigned our newsletter. We have greeters at meetings and provide flyers and handouts from ARRL as "Welcome Kits" for visitors to CMARC. Our Youth membership has seen a drastic upswing, and our weekly Net is well attended. We are dedicating extra effort to build our annual HamFair, which is held in October of each year and we are working hard to stay involved in the public eye.

CMARC has reorganized the ARES/RACES program locally. Our ever-popular SKYWARN is stronger than ever this year and, as we prepare for the 2000 severe weather season, class preparation is well under way to train spotters.

For the Youth of our Club, we have been working hard to make the Under-22 Director more functional in the Club. Our hope is to take our youth to Newington, CT this summer, to allow them to visit the ARRL, as well as the historical H.P. Maxim dwelling. Additionally, our youth are working to promote Amateur Radio in their schools by offering Ham demonstrations before summer.

The year 2001 will see CMARC enter its 80th year in existence. We plan a Special Event to mark the event. So much more is planned for CMARC, but time will only allow us to focus on the best efforts to keep our Club in the public eye.
