Surfin': Got Shack?

By Stan Horzepa, WA1LOU

January 21, 2005

This week, visit the radio shacks of other hams without leaving the comfort of your computer keyboard.

Did you ever want to look inside another ham's shack? Sure, you did, and so did Brent Crier, N9BC. So much so, that Brent built a Web site to display the contents of other hams' shacks. Brent's Welcome to World Wide HamShacks Web site displays shacks in three flavors: home shacks, portable shacks and mobile shacks.

The Welcome to World Wide HamShacks Web site lets you visit other ham radio shacks in homes, in fields, and on wheels.

You can view all the shacks in the Welcome to World Wide HamShacks' galleries to your heart's content and you can add photos of your own shack to the appropriate galley, too. However, before you can add your own, you must complete a very simple registration process (just create a user name and input your full name and e-mail address).

This is an interesting site. It is always fascinating to view other shacks to see how other hams set up their radio equipment. You can learn how to improve the set-up your own shack, as well as things to avoid!

Brew Your Own LC Meter Revisited

I received a number of e-mails regarding the January 7 installment of this column, in which I pointed out some Web sites that will assist you in building an LC meter. In particular, readers wrote for more information regarding the Columbus (Ohio) QRP Club's PIC L/C Meter. Here is some additional information regarding that meter:

For a diagram showing all the components in the meter, go to the parts overlay page.

To purchase the magazine (Everyday Practical Electronics, EPE) containing all the details about the project, go to EPEonline Web site, click on the Projects link in the upper left corner, scroll down to February 2004, and then click on the Purchase This Issue link.

To purchase a bare printed circuit board, go to EPEonline Web site and click on the Store link in the upper left corner of the page. When a new window opens, scroll down to EPE Projects For February 2004 to order PIC LCF Meter (Bare Board Only).

Until next week, keep on surfin'.

Editor's note: During the holidays, Stan Horzepa, WA1LOU, rebuilt his shack with new shelves and gave his cats new nooks to explore and sleep in. To discuss shacks, shelves, cat whiskers and other neat stuff, e-mail Stan.
