ARRL Board Announces Award Winners

Brian Mileshosky, N5ZGT

NEWINGTON, CT, Jul 26, 2000--The ARRL Board of Directors has named Brian Mileshosky, N5ZGT, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, as winner of the 1999 Hiram Percy Maxim Award. First licensed at age 12, Mileshosky--now 20--is constantly promoting ham radio to young people. He is active in Venture Crew 296, an Amateur Radio search and rescue youth group. Through his involvement in the Boy Scouts, he has participated in many Jamboree-On-The-Air activities including demonstrations and Radio merit badge classes.

An ARRL member, Mileshosky is an active Official Observer and was a speaker at the "Youth in Amateur Radio" held at the 2000 Dayton Hamvention and ARRL National Convention. He is a member of the Board of Directors to the Upper Rio FM Society Inc, a Volunteer Examiner, and a member of both the Bernalillo County and the Sandoval County ARES teams. He also runs a weekly, statewide swap net.

He'll begin his senior year this fall at the University of New Mexico, where he is pursuing a degree in electrical engineering. In 1997 Mileshosky was honored by being named Newsline Young Ham of the Year.

The Hiram Percy Maxim Award goes each year to a radio amateur under the age of 21 whose Amateur Radio accomplishments and contributions are of the most exemplary nature. The prize consists of a cash award of $1000, a suitably engraved plaque, and travel and accommodation expenses to enable the winner to attend an ARRL convention for a formal presentation.

Allen Wolff, KC7O

The Board named Allen Wolff, KC7O, of Sierra Madre, California, as the 1999 ARRL Herb S. Brier Instructor of the Year Award. This award is presented to a volunteer ham radio instructor. An ARRL Life Member who's been teaching ham radio for 14 years, Wolff enjoys Field Day, mobile VHF, UHF and HF. He also obtains free membership in the Pasadena Radio Club for each of his students. According to a former student and present club member, Wolff has brought approximately 450 members into the club since 1986. Some of his former students now are club officers.

When Wolff sees a need he fills it. In 1987, his two sons wanted to earn their ticket. There weren't any classes available so he started a Novice/Technician class. One former student said Wolff "teaches with enthusiasm and uses encouragement and humor to keep the students attention." Allen uses everything from comics, to slides and videos to help students remember the answer as well as the explanation. As another former student put it: "Allen is a resourceful teacher who is continually looking for new and exciting ways to inspire both young and old."

Dan Calzaretta, NX9C

The ARRL Board voted Dan Calzaretta, NX9C, of Portland, Oregon, as the 1999 ARRL Professional Educator of the Year. This award goes to a professional teacher within a school system.

Calzaretta has been teaching ham radio for 20 years. In 1992, he joined the staff at the Pacific Crest Community School and added Amateur Radio to the curriculum. Last year NX9C submitted a grant request entitled "Amateur Radio: Emergency Communication, Community Service and the Classroom." It used Amateur Radio as the main component but also included social studies, science, and geography. In May he received a grant for almost $6000, enabling him to purchase equipment for the Pacific Crest Amateur Radio Club, N7XP. He also was able to implement a "World Communications" class.

Calzaretta encourages field trip and activities the students will never forget. He uses a slinky to study the relationship between frequency and wavelength and has been known to employ fruits and vegetables to study voltage. His students describe him as an "effective teacher in a classroom or one-on-one, fun to be around."

Diane Ortiz, K2DO

Named by the Board as the winner of the 1999 Philip J. McGan Memorial Silver Antenna Award was Diane Ortiz, K2DO, of Bellport, New York. Ortiz, an ARRL Life Member, edits the "YL News" column in QST. The McGan award is given annually to a League member who goes the extra mile to promote Amateur Radio at the local, state or national level. The award honors an amateur who demonstrates outstanding public relations success on behalf of Amateur Radio, and who best exemplifies the volunteer spirit of the award's namesake.

As both an ARRL Public Information Coordinator and Public Information Officer, Ortiz has put in several years on the public relations front, making a difference in the New York City/Long Island Section and beyond. She has achieved outstanding success in telling the Amateur Radio story to newspaper, TV and radio reporters, hosting a cable television program about Amateur Radio and providing guidance for other public information volunteers in her area. Her PR talents extend to include working with young people and promoting the benefits of Amateur Radio to local officials. A ham for more than 25 years, Ortiz also enjoys contesting and keeps a keen eye on the world of Amateur Radio through her affiliations with more than 20 local, national and international ham radio organizations.
