Southern Florida SEC Jim Goldsberry, KD4GR, Silent Key

NEWINGTON, CT, December 30, 2004 -- ARRL Southern Florida Section Emergency Coordinator Jim Goldsberry, KD4GR, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Sunrise on December 27, 2004. He was 60 years old.

"Jim was an invaluable asset to the ham radio community in South Florida," said Frank Marques, KG4EQY. "His passing will leave a void that will be difficult to fill."

In addition to his service as SEC for the past three years, Jim served as an ARRL Assistant Section Manager, District Emergency Coordinator and Official Emergency Station. He first took on a leadership role in Amateur Radio public service when he became an Emergency Coordinator in 1990.

"Earlier this year, Jim stepped down from his long-held position as Net Manager of the Southeast Florida 2 Meter NTS Traffic Net," Marques explained. "He worked many long hours ensuring that the Amateur Radio community was fully trained and prepared to handle any emergency that might arise, especially during the area's 6-month hurricane season. This hard work was well rewarded this year, when Jim worked tirelessly to coordinate CATs (communication assistance teams) to the west and east coasts of Florida in response to Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Jeanne."

Ford Beach, KB4WBY, added: "Jim Goldsberry was always there whenever anyone was trying to find his/her place in the Amateur Radio structure. Jim spent many hours in planning the best routes for the members to follow and hosted many meetings at his home to train members in selecting the best choices and planning for future events."

Jim was employed by Motorola for the past 30 years in their Professional Radio Division and was member of the Motorola Amateur Radio Club. He was active in the Broward Amateur Radio Digital Society and a life member of the ARRL. A funeral service and burial is scheduled for Friday, December 31, in Sunrise, Florida.
