ARRL HQ lost a friend, co-worker and all-around good guy, Steve Mansfield, N1MZA, to cancer in July 2002. Steve had been diagnosed with brain cancer in 2000, and battled the disease for two years. He continued his routine for as long as he could, never complained (well, not much) and he always had a positive attitude. Steve was amazing, though it was disheartening to watch his struggle.

In 2004, some ARRL employees saw that Newington was having a Relay For Life, and decided that participation would be a great way to pay tribute to Steve. That first year, Team ARRL raised over $1000.

Sadly, since the first Relay, ARRL HQ has lost several of ARRL-related family members and friends, and many more have been diagnosed with cancer. On a happier note, of those that have been recently diagnosed, most have gone through treatment and are now in recovery.

So this year, Team ARRL will remember those who have lost their battle with cancer, and will walk in honor of our survivors. This year the team hopes to raise $3000 to beat cancer and help find a cure.

There are more than 4600 Relays this year world-wide. To find a Relay near you, go to www.cancer.org. You can visit Team ARRL at www.acsevents.org/relay/ctnewington.
