AView is included with the QST View 1995-1999 and 2000-2004 sets. Earlier sets, however, still include the older viewer. If you'd like to use AView with your QST View sets, download AViewForQST.exe (7,257 kB). Install, following the on-screen prompts.
An upgrade (qstv104.exe, 790,588 bytes) to QST View 1.04 is available. To install it, simply download the qstv104.exe file and run it. (QST View should already be installed on the system before you run the upgrade program.)
Among the various improvements in version 1.04 is a new, more comprehensive help file, including further instructions on using QST View more efficiently.
This upgrade also resolves the "Winhelp" or "Winhlp32" Crash, meaning all users of any QST View set from 1940-1969 should upgrade. Users of other QST View sets are also encouraged to upgrade.
QST View 1995-1999 and other ARRL Collection CD-ROM products use a common viewer application, ARRL AView. AView can also be used with the older QST View sets (covering the years 1914-1994). Those older sets included a different viewer program, but we recommend that users of the older sets not install or use that older software. Use AView instead. After you install QST View 1995-1999, you need only select AView's File | Preferences menu item, click the CD-ROMs tab, and check off the QST View CDs you have available. You will then be able to use AView to browse, display and print all of the QST View sets you have. Note: QST View 1995-1999 is required to use older QST View sets with AView.
During installation or when trying to run QST View (all sets) you may receive one or more of the following error messages:
Load Error
Cannot connect to database QST
Fatal Error
Unable to open default file cabinet!
Failed to establish a connection to database QST!
Reason: A network adapter has not been found.
Fatal Error
Failed to restore previous connection
If the error occurs during installation, it does so at about the 56% point of the install, as shown in the on-screen gauge that is displayed.
This error should occur only on systems that are running Windows 3.1 or Windows 3.11, not on systems that are running Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 95 or Windows NT. (Please contact ARRL by email or by phone at 860-594-0214 or by fax at 860-594-0259 if you encounter this problem on other than a Windows 3.1 or Windows 3.11 system, or if none of the solutions provided here solves the problem.)
This problem should arise only if the share.exe program is loaded prior to running Windows. You can determine if share.exe is loaded using the command:
mem /c/pSHARE will appear in the list of modules if share.exe is loaded.
The following solutions should resolve the problem:
When you try to use QST View Help -- either through QST View or the icon added to the QST View program group -- a General Protection Fault is generated by winhelp.exe or winhlp32.exe. This is caused by a corrupt qstview.hlp file, located in the QST View directory.
This problem only affects specific QST View sets:
The problematic qstview.hlp file is 851,968 bytes large.
Upgrade to QST View version 1.04. (790,588 bytes) Included is the correct and working version of qstview.hlp.
During the QST View installation process, records are added to the QST database file. If your computer crashes while the records are being added, you'll find that you can't search for any topics, issues or articles due to the incomplete database.
To remedy the problem, you need to delete the existing QST View directory and reinstall QST View. This will rebuild the database so that it's fully functional again. You'll need to reinstall every set that you previously had installed (if you had any), as deleting the directory wipes out all of the database.
