June Section Report
FIELD
DAY 2008.
Kudos to the clubs who took on the challenge of operating the 24 hours
of Field Day. This year my wife, Tammy, KC4CTB and I decided to do something
different for Field Day -- we loaded up the truck and we "hit the
road" to visit as many Field Day sites as we could across Kentucky.
While we were only able to visit 10 of the more than 20 Field Day operations
across the state, it was a great trip that we plan to repeat in the future.
Thanks to all of the groups who posted the location of their Field Day
site on the ARRL Field Day Locator web page.
In a fantastic
show of support for Amateur Radio, several Field Day sites we visited
were operating either as Class F or were employing equipment loaned by
the local Emergency Management director. Several Field Day operations
also incorporated a VE test session as part of the event. I would encourage
every Kentucky group who took part in Field Day to post information on
your Field Day on the ARRL web site Contest Soapbox. There are always
good stories worth telling about Field Day, so
visit this link to read what others have written in the Soapbox
about their own operations.
FIELD
DAY PHOTOS. As part of our road trip, my wife and I asked Field Day
participants at each site we visited to sign a special one-of-a-kind road
trip t-shirt created just for this event. Photos of the shirt and of the
Field Day sites visited are posted near the bottom of this Web page. Have
photos for your own Field Day operation? Send yours in with a description
of what's pictured in each photo and I'll add them to this page.
FIELD
DAY PUBLICITY. Kudos to District 9 DEC Johnny Hager, N4KJU, and everyone
who had a hand in getting TV station WYMT to visit the Amateur Radio Community
Service (ARCS) club's Field Day operation. Click
here to view the Hazard TV station's story on the ARCS Field Day.
Did your Field Day operation attract publicity from your local TV, radio
station or newspaper? Please let the Section Manager know! Drop me an
e-mail at ky4z@arrl.org or send
copies of your clippings to my postal address listed at the top of this
page.

Comments:
KYHAM now has online renewal forms for station appointments. All appointments
will expire at the end of the year unless these forms are filled out.
To date, we have had many people who have filed their renewals. The online
forms can be found at: http://www.kyham.net/emcomm/ares.html.
Reminder: All ARRL ARES Appointees are required to have current ARRL
membership.

District 2:
District 3:
District 4:
District 5: KE4JYC -Nelson Co ARES demonstrated WinLink 2000 (using RMS)
to the county emergency Manager as well as other interested folks. All
were impressed that "E-mail" could be sent out of the area without
the "Internet". The site for field day this year was the "Nelson
County Emergency Operations Center". Emergency Management activated
the county EMA in conjunction with ARES and field day. Discussions were
held to consider implementing Winlink county wide with a VHF link to District
5 EOC in Elizabethtown.
District 6:
District 7:
District 8: KI4PSW reports 19 June 2008 an ARES meeting was held in Morehead,
KY with Matt Tinker ARRL Section Representative and County EC Fred Jones.
Theses two men shared their years of experience with the group, and provided
samples of bylaws etc. Their efforts will go a long way in getting the
Area 8 ARES Organization of to a good start.
Field Day was conducted at two locations in the region, Montgomery County
and Bath County, a great time was had by all that participated.
District 9: N4KJU Gives us a link to a news clip of their field day operation
from WYMT.

He thanks Tim Wright for submitting a report on ARES involvement on in
reference to tornado activity in Greenup County. Kudos to a joint effort
between Greenup County Kentucky ARES and Lawrence County Ohio ARES in
this incident. Cooperation, Coordination,Communication, and Commitment
is the key toward effective ARES response.
The District wide HF and 2 meter nets becoming more active with check-ins
averaging 40 per month on the HF net and 60 on the 2 meter net.
Preliminary plans are being made for the District 9 SET exercise. More
about this as the plan progresses.
Field Day - From the reports received in District 9 reflected six ARES
counties participating which included:Greenup, Boyd, Carter, Johnson,
Magoffin, and Floyd. Counties within the district combined their efforts
for Field day and rode the waves together. Severe thunderstorms affected
the operation at most locations. Communicators being prepared and operating
under adverse conditions is a big part of what we are all about.
27 June 2008, Amateurs supplied communications for a Ham Radio/Electronics
Course that was being taught at Ashland Community Techincal College to
give the students a basic insight into Amateur Radio and Electronics.
KD4OVM - 04 June 2008, Net Activated for severe weather in area with two
tornados confirmed by local fire fighters in City of Greenup on the ground
with other funnel clouds spotted in the area.
KB9ORD - Amateurs of District # 9 went to Louisa for the Three Rivers
Medical Center's Health Fair. John Hager N4KJU, James Pickle AE4JS, Fred
Jones WA4SWF and I Ralph Tuley KB9ORD were in attendance and passed out
fliers about Amateur Radio and answered questions for the many people
who stopped by our table. We also had a Two meter radio set up for a live
demonstration.
On June 28th and 29th I took the ARES trailer and went to the top of
Hill Crest for Field Day. We servived the High wind and rain and still
had a good time and made many contacts.
WA4SAG - Held an ARES exercise in June also and had communications from
the site to the EOC and KF4KPL.
