LOUISIANA SECTION SIMULATED EMERGENCY TEST (SET) was a success. We had great participation but poor HF propagation beginning around 10 AM. DECs and ECs should get their SET reports in to Jim AI5B as quickly as possible. As soon as all results are compiled Jim will issue a combined report to ARRL HQ and to ARES leadership. Jim will also issue a compilation of lessons learned and recommendations.

OTHER REPORTS RECEIVED: Virginia Bryant KD5DJA PIO. Jim Bookter N5NVP Section Affiliated Club Coordinator.

From Jim N5NVP: At the end of August the Louisiana Section had 35 Active Affiliated Clubs and 9 of those were Active Affiliated Special Service Clubs (SSCs). There are 22 Inactive Affiliated Clubs. On September 25th a new Affiliated Club was chartered, making the total 36 Active Clubs. The New Orleans Amateur Radio Club was presented its charter by Jim N5NVP at the New Orleans Hamfest on October 3.

LOUISIANA SECTION FLOWER FUND: Virginia Bryant KD5DJA has volunteered to receive, account for and disburse funds to send flowers to the funerals of Louisiana Section member SKs on behalf of the Section. If you would like to participate (and I hope that you would) please send a check payable to Louisiana Section Flower Fund to Virginia at 110 HERRING ST LEESVILLE, LA 71446. Virginia's data is good on QRZ. She has already received several donations of $25 - $50. The accounting of this fund will appear here on a quarterly basis. Also, please remember to report SKs to me at K5GLS@arrl.org.

LOUISIANA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: The window for application for the scholarship is now open. Please encourage any licensed entering or attending student to apply for this scholarship. Details are available on the ARRL Website. A proposal to raise the scholarship amount from $500 to $750 was introduced by Jim Molan KD5IGG, the scholarship committee chairman, at the Pineville Hamfest. We need all clubs to donate an equal amount to the scholarship fund each year and recommend $100. Individual contributions are encouraged as well. If the fund is built up sufficiently the committee will increase the scholarship amount up to $1000 in the future.

OTHER NEWS: If you wish to have noteworthy information about club activities, individual achievements, etc. included in the Section Summary please send them to k5gls@arrl.org.

MULTIPLE SCHLEROSIS BIKE RIDE - The annual bike tour for the Louisiana chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society was an outstanding success in spite of the heavy rain storms on Sunday that caused the Tour Director to close the event two hours early. Over 1,000 cyclists pedaled the 150 miles of the two-day roundtrip from Hammond, Louisiana to Percy Quin State Park near McComb, Mississippi and back, to benefit research and therapies for those afflicted with Multiple Sclerosis.

Members of the Southeast Louisiana Amateur Radio Club (SELARC) were joined by members of the Southwest Mississippi Amateur Radio Club (SMARC) to provide communications with the rest stops and medical, command and supply vehicles along the route using the SELARC VHF repeater. The cyclists and their family members and the tour staff were appreciative of the communications assistance provided by the ham radio "experts" to ensure the safety and well-being of the tour participants.

The twenty-four hams who provided this public service and demonstration of amateur radio were: Bill Borstel KB5SKW, Peg Borstel KC5BXU, Brian Briggs KE5YRN, John Conn KI5MW, Patti Faurie KE5NG, Scott Hernandez KD5PCK, John Leblanc KE5JZM, Jason Liuzza KC5WDH, Leslie Liuzza KE5ILT, Peter Liuzza WB5ERM, Fred Mayer K5FMM, Robert Priez WB5FBS, Steve Raacke KC5SAS, Susie Rachinskas KE5KMP, Carol Redmond KE5GOC, James Redmond K5QNT, John Schilleci W5KCH, Ralph Shaw K5CAV, Jack Stang N5XVJ, George Swan AE5FK, Alan Travis KR5T, Jim Valega WB5LSH, Martin Varisco KF5CJU and Jeffery Winbourne N5ZNT.

This was the twenty-third year that SELARC has provided communications assistance for the tour, said Robert Priez, WB5FBS, who has served as communications coordinator for each of those years.

U.S. COAST GUARD AUXILIARY RADIO DAY will be commemorating the 70th anniversary of the USCG Auxiliary on Amateur HF frequencies Saturday October 17, 2009. Special Event Stations will be using a special 1X1 call. For info go to http://a0530407.uscgaux.info/SED 2009.html.

JAMBOREE ON THE AIR (JOTA) is scheduled for October 17 & 18. This is the premier operating activity for Amateur Radio and Scouts around the world. Many Club members in the Section will be participating with Scout Troops throughout Louisiana.

CUB SCOUT DEMONSTRATION - October 23-25 (the weekend After JOTA), the South East Louisiana Council will be having their Council Wide Cub World (weekend camp out) at Camp Salmen located in Mississippi. There will be approximately 2500 people in attendance, with approximately 1500 of these being Scouts.

On Saturday the 24th the Jefferson Amateur Radio Club, The New Orleans US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla and the Pearl River (Mississippi) County Amateur Radio Club will set up a "Field Day" type operation at Camp Salmen to demonstrate Amateur Radio operation to the Scouts. The Scouts will be given the opportunity to make Amateur Radio contacts in GOTA style operations.

Thanks to Keith Barnes W5KB of JARC and USCGA and Larry Wagoner N5WLW of PRCARC for taking the lead in organizing this effort along with Jeffrey Coit KA1USG, the Cub Scout leader for this operation.

SILENT KEYS: Thankfully none reported this month.
