NOVEMBER 2009 OHIO SECTION MONTHLY NEWS
October sure is a busy month BUT I can see that November is just as busy with all the Fall Festivals, Parades, Apple Butter events and so on down the line. November also signals the start of the Holiday Season. This brings lots of Club Christmas Parties. If you are going to invite an ARRL Official , a member of the Ohio Section Cabinet, do it ASAP because our calendars get filled up quickly during this time of year.
Many Fall festival planners have enlisted the help of amateur radio operators to help with communications services. I am glad to report that many Ohio Section ARES groups have earned the reputation of providing reliable and skilled communications services.
School is back in session and since it is darker in the early morning when lots of students are waiting for the bus, sometimes it is hard to see them standing along the street/roadway so drive safely.
The Ohio Section Conference in September is where the 2009 Ohio Section Newsletter award winners are announced. The First place winner went to NOARS LOG, a publication of the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society. The Second place winner went to ZERO BEAT, a publication of the Alliance ARC. And The Third place winner is The LOG SHEET a publication of the Butler County VHF Association. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!
At the Ohio Section Conference the 16th recipient of the Allan Severson, AB8P, Award was announced. This year's award went to Joe Phillips, K8QOE (SK). Joe's wife, Donna, received the special plaque for Joe. No one, in my opinion, deserved this award more than Joe.
REMEMBER --- Scott Yonally, N8SY, is the one in charge of the ARRLOhio.org website. This is a new position for the Ohio Section, but Scott is not new to the Ohio Section Cabinet. Scott was previously the Public Information Coordinator for Ohio.
The ARRL has recently reported on the Commercialization of Amateur Radio, the rules, the risks, and the issues. All amateurs should read Weavers Words 10-3-09 as well as Weavers Words 10-22-09, concerning FCC Part 97.113 regarding drills. Both of these are equally informative and most important.
Did you get involved with the ARRL On Line Auction October 22nd?
Did you know that Ohio has over 6000 ARRL Members in the Ohio Section making it the largest in the U.S, This is the result of sound leadership over many years. The Ohio Section Cabinet is very proud of this fact.
It is Election time now for many Counties in the Ohio Section. AND this also includes election of officer time for many Clubs. Remember, after your Club officer elections, FILE THE ANNUAL REPORT FORM, with any changes in your club. BUT, even if there are no changes, file the annual report form just to keep your records current with the ARRL. I have e-mailed, sent cards, sent letters, and even phoned many club contact persons only to find out the information we had is not current. Some of you have lost active club status, special service club status just because you failed to keep your club information current with us. When a Club contact person for the ARRL/Ohio Section changes explain to the newly appointed contact person how to and when to file the proper forms with the ARRL/Ohio Section. New officers, new meeting places, times etc.,new addresses and contact persons all to be filed with the ARRL on the Annual report form. Also make sure you file the Annual report form every year, as well as the Special Service Status clubs renewal every two years. You can download all these forms from the League pages via internet.
If your Club is ARRL affiliated and in the active status, you can keep $15.00 for every NEW ARRL membership you sign up and you can keep $2.00 for each member renewing their ARRL membership through your club.
NOW, let's see what many of you have been doing lately---------------
Mount Vernon Amateur Radio Club had scheduled Red Cross First Aid Training Course to the members attending the October meeting. This club enjoys participating in FOX HUNTS. We all know what fun these events are to attend. The Club participated in the SET this year also. I just cannot mention the Mt Vernon Club without mentioning Don Russell, W8PEN, and his antenna projects.
The Milford ARC remains active with all sorts of activities which includes their VE Sessions and Fall activities being scheduled.
The Greater Cincinnati ARA reports their Hamfest was a great event! The members of this club are now busy with VE license exams, hidden TX hunts, and other club activities. They plan a club meeting theme of Portable Operations. Bet that is really interesting to sit in on. I am waiting to hear all about this event.
Xenia Weather Amateur Radio Net will be among those clubs to be holding election of officers. They have a Beggers Net all ready for Halloween. They will be participating in the Harvest 5 K Classic Run/Walk and the Cross Country Mid East Regional and more. This is a very active group.
The Pioneer Amateur Radio Fellowship remains active. They have quite a group. Many activities were enjoyed throughout the year and many more planned next year. I am sure there is a Christmas party in the makings knowing Joy, KA8TDF.
The Scioto Valley ARC has been busy with their club house activities, repeater etc. They had a great time with their 50th Anniversary Party. I am sure we will hear more about that in the future correspondence.
The Cuyahoga Amateur Radio Society has been very busy. They provided communications for the Diabetes Association walk. They are in the middle of amateur radio classes, getting ready for some contests and Holiday events.
The Portage County Amateur Radio Service members are busy working on their club site. They have VE exams scheduled, classes on the way, and contests on the schedule. They are proud of their President, Jim Aylward, KC8PD, who, at the Great Lakes Division Symposium at Findlay, was presented the Amateur of the Year award by the Great Lakes Division Director, Jim Weaver, K8JE.
The Massillon Amateur Radio Club members are busy planning their Hamfest that will be held Sunday November 1st. (also set the clock back weekend). They are wishing a new fund raising event will be a success. It is staffing a concession stand during the 2009 season of the Akron Zips college football team. The event will include staffing seven home games during the Fall season. Always a busy group!
The Delaware Amateur Radio Association members hold a give-away night at the October meeting. This is done each year and is also known as the Boat anchor Exchange. A lot of "good stuff" changes hands and a good time is had by all attending this event. They are in the midst of planning their Holiday Party as many clubs are this time of year. Their ARES group will be providing communications for the Veterans Day Parade. Many of the group helped with the All Horse Parade making this event successful.
The Portage Amateur Radio Club members have been active with Public Service Events, Repeater updates, updating the Club website, and even planning the 2010 Portage Hamfair. The next club event will be the annual Christmas Party.
OH-KY-IN members are busy with the Amateur Extra , Technician class and General Class classes. Some of the members plan on doing some contesting in the near future. There is always something going on with this group
The Central Ohio Amateur Radio Emergency Service remains busy with the many Public Service events which provides a lot of practice for the "real" disaster. This group volunteered to provide communications to the 2009 Nationwide Better Health Columbus Marathon & Marathon.
Well, I think that's it for this month. Keep those Newsletters coming. I read each and every one of them. If you would like your Club activities mentioned in the monthly Ohio Section News, let me know. Please remember to file your Annual Report form. Keep your club information current.
AND, just remember, sometime, somewhere, when you lease expect it, I will be seeing YOU! Until then,
Best 73, Joanne Solak, KJ3O, ACC Ohio Section
