Laura Smith Webinar
Laura Smith, FCC Special Council for Amateur Radio Enforcement, was the special guest presenter at a Webinar was, held Sept. 12th, hosted by Bill Edgar, N3LLR, Atlantic Division Director. As was anticipated, the major topic and majority of the questions and answers were about EMCOMM, and specifically about CFR 47 -- 97.113, use of amateur radio for pecuniary interest. While the discussions were enlightening, many of the questions asked by amateurs, especially those associated with EMCOMM, were asked in a way that implied that they were searching for a "loophole" that would allow operation on the fringes of the law. The rules are very specific in this matter, and have been in effect for many years. The many comments posted after the Webinar indicated that many questions were left inadequately answered. Because of the need for further clarification, a second Webinar is scheduled for late October. (see coming events below)
Amateur Radio At Local Fairs
September is county fair month in Oklahoma and at least two clubs in the section demonstrated Amateur Radio to fair goers. The Oklahoma Independent Amateur Radio Club, Blackwell Oklahoma, and the Noble County Repeater Group, Perry, Oklahoma, set up and manned stations at their respective county fairs, attracting much local interest in our hobby/service. The activities are a good way to keep amateur radio in front of the public and remind them that when all else fails, Amateur Radio is there to serve.
SM Training in Newington
The 2009 Section Manager Workshop was held at ARRL Headquarters, September 25th thru 27th . All of the new SMs' were in attendance. The workshop included presentations from the following ARRL staffers;
Stan Kutzko, KX9X, Contest Manager, Dennis Dura, K2DCD, Emergency Preparedness and Response Manager, Allen Pitts, W1AGP, Media and Publications Manager, Debra Johnson, K1DMJ, Education Services Manager, Bob Iderbitzen, NQ1R, Sales and Marketing Manager, Diane Petrilli, KB1RNF, Membership Manager, Chuck Skolaut, K0BOG, Field and Regulatory Correspondent for the Amateur Auxiliary and Regulatory Information Service, Steve Ewald, WV1X, Field Organization Team Supervisor, Norm Fusaro, W3IZ, Assistant Manager for Membership and Volunteer Programs, and Ed Hare, W1RFI, ARRL Laboratory Manager.
During our visit we also had the opportunity to visit with Harold Kramer WJ1B, David Sumner K1ZZ, and Mary Hobart, K1MMH.
The workshop was jam-packed with information, and we ended the session Saturday later than planned, but we did have an opportunity to operate W1AW. Operating W1AW and visiting with Ed Hare, W1RFI were the highlights of the trip for me. It is not often that a ham has the chance to operate such a well engineered and constructed station, or visit with such a technically astute ham. What a blast!
