Field Day 2008: Take a look at this ! This year, for the first time, the ARRL has put together a Station Locator FD Locator
to help amateurs or those interested in Amateur Radio find a Field Day site near them. According to ARRL Field Day Manager Dan Henderson, N1ND. Scroll around to find Field Day locations that have been entered into the map. Or enter your site by clicking on the "Add a Station" link located to the top right of the map.
Radio Association of Western New York (RAWNY) held their annual "Youth Night" and by the looks of the pictures had a pretty big crowd.
Local Buffalo TV2 personality Kevin O'Connell gave Amateur Radio a look and some television exposure.
Kevin "hammed" it up Monday morning on Daybreak! Live from U.S.S. Little Rock, Kevin interviewed ham radio enthusiasts from R.A.W.N.Y, The Radio Association of Western New York. RAWNY was formed in 1917 and is believed to be the second oldest amateur radio group in the United States and is considered to be a general interest club encompassing all aspects of amateur radio. Monday morning, they demonstrated Morse Code, and ham radios, and talked about their importance during wartime. RAWNY meets at the Church of the Nativity, 1530 Colvin Boulevard in Tonawanda, NY.
Pictures of the Youth Night are at the bottom of this page.
Contesting 2008
The CQ World Wide WPX contest is coming up 0000Z, Mar 29 to 2359Z, Mar 30. A great way to work some new countries or just to see how well your antennas are working.
I see about ten state QSO parties coming up in April. These are not big contests always fun and relaxing. You can work some new counties too !

Local BPL News
Bad news on the BPL front. A local company just received a New York State grant of $1.6 million dollars to install BPL service in Solvay and the surrounding area. Talk about a waste of our tax payer dollars ! BPL is quiet in Sherrill, Churchville and Skaneateles NY so far, but that might change with this grant money. I wonder if we can all get a million dollars of free money from the state ?
In the Syracuse Area there are a couple of wireless internet services that will be offered soon if not already. And I hear that cable internet is going down in price too. That means that the costly BPL service proposed is not a deal at all, when speeds are slower for the same price. Many businesses around the area are offering free wireless service.
For those of you faced with BPL, please take the time to talk to and write your town board and object to the interference that BPL causes and also write your state government officials as well as your congress person and senators. We may know that BPL isn't worth it, but that doesn't mean that your town board does.
