HELLO West Virginia Amateurs (August 2008)
As usual for all WV amateurs, the month of August was busy with hamfest events in and out of WV. The TARA Huntington Hamfest was quite a success, with many vendor and good participation.
The ARRL Roanoke Division Convention and WV 50th ARRL CONVENTION was a great success, with larger than usual attendance, the excellent Special Event Station W8V; Talk-In Station; EmComm Emergency Preparedness Evaluation Set-Up Contest; NET and ARES Forums; Fox Hunt; VE Exams; Keynote Speaker Gordon West, WB6NOA; guest speaker Dr. David Boyd, (Interoperability & Compatibility); FCC Forum Bill Cross, W3TN; Technical Forum Jim Wilcox, W3WV; Field Day, Amateur of the Year, WVQSO Party, ARRL 50th Anniversary Awards; DX Forum; QCWA and MARS meetings; the 1st Mill Pig Roast, Infamous Auction and the Royal Order of the Wouff Ceremony. The weekend ended with the WVSARC meeting and Prize Drawings. It was a two day event and the attendance was light on Sunday, however, it completed the great weekend. Many, many thanks to the members of the WVSARC, the amateurs who participated in the preparation of the event, and all those who attended making it a GREAT SUCCESS. The Convention was well represented by Dan Henderson, N1ND, John Kanode, N4MM, ARRL Honorary Vice President.
WV AMATEUR RADIO CLUBS -Thanks for updating your ARRL AC Annual reports and WVSARC Club listings on the http://qsl.net/wvsarc site.
REMINDER:
NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH - SEPTEMBER 2008:
So far, more than 1,800 national, regional, state and local organizations have agreed to promote emergency preparedness during National Preparedness Month in September.

Joe Richards, WV8WVU, ARRL Public Information Coordinator, West Virginia reports:
The West Virginia State Amateur Radio Council (WVSARC) had over three hundred amateur radio enthusiasts celebrating its 50th year on August 23â"24, 2008 at its annual convention at Jackson's Mill in Weston, West Virginia. WVSARC also served as host for the American Radio Relay League's (ARRL) Roanoke Division meeting. The Convention began with the President's Reception on Friday evening, August 22, 2008. The program began at 7:00 a.m. Saturday August 23, 2008 and concluded on August 24, 2008 at noon and featured a Keynote Address by internationally known Gordon West, WB6NOA of the Gordon West Radio School, Inc. David G. Boyd, Ph.D., K9MX, Director, Command, Control and Interoperability Science and Technology Directorate, U.S. Department of Homeland Security addressed the development and the implementation of interoperable communications among public service agencies including Fire/Police/EMS. William Cross, W3TN, FCC Wireless Telecommunications Bureau presented an FCC update regarding amateur radio operations. Mr. Cross encouraged amateur radio operators to use the amateur radio bands, to improve radio technology and to engage in experimentation. The two day program included a Special Event Station, VE Exams, ARRL and DX forums. Technical forums included Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), MARS, QCWA and NTS Net meeting. Dan Ringer, K8WV conducted the evening Auction and the WVSARC performed the midnight Wouff Hong Ceremony. On Saturday evening the group enjoyed a festive Pig Roast. Significant awards and recognitions included Richard Dillon, K8VE as West Virginia's Amateur Radio Operator of the Year. Dave Poe, W8IW, West Virginia QSO Party Winner. Maurice G Brown, N8VA was recognized for his 100 VE testing sessions. The 2007 Field Day winner was Stonewall Jackson Amateur Radio Association, Liz Myers, W8LIZ won the Level I (Basic) competition for Emergency Communications Station Set-up Competition and Kenny Harris, WA8LLM won the Level II (Advanced) competition. Joe Richards, WV8WVU
Bob Adams, W8GU, ARRL Affiliated Club Coordinator West Virginia reports:
ACC notes: Lots of great things happened in the ARRL WV section since last writing, so, let's get to it!
Logan County ARC is active again. After spending time at the Charleston hamfest with a couple of the LCARC members they have regrouped and are getting the club back on its feet. The group has 3 repeaters in the southern part of WV and they want to be ARES active. With the weather, flooding LCARC should become an important part of emergency service for that part of the state. I look forward to helping LCARC in the future and wish them the best of luck on their reformation.
If you live in the Logan area, get with the Logan County ARC and help them. Contact Naomi Maynard, KD8CVJM @ maynardsidney@aol.com . LCARC meeting are held on the 1st Thursday at the 911 Center at 6:30pm.
Speaking of the Huntington Hamfest, I want to think all who attended and enjoyed on a well produced hamfest. KA8ZGY, Ann, our SM, Greg N8XAQ and I were at the ARRL booth and met a lot of folks.
And then there was the 50th Anniversary ARRL Convention at Jackson's Mill. Thanks to the WVSARC, under N8MIN's very capable direction. Guys and gals....you did a GREAT job! I don't think I talked to anyone who did not enjoy themselves.
Attendance was up this year. This is bucking the trend of declining hamfest attendance, this leads me to believe the
We had several dignitaries such as Gordon West, WB6NOA, Bill Cross W3TN and Dr. David Boyd K9MX were in attendance. All of the forums were well attended and lots of knowledge as passed on between hams. As far as I am concerned, the gaining of knowledge is the most important part of any ham gathering.
Of course K8WV, Dan Ringer, did the annual Jackson's Mill Auction. Dan thanks! Your humor and whit made the auction enjoyable.
For those living in the Wayne WV area, we have the Wayne Amateur Radio Club active! Currently, they are NOT an ARRL affiliated club but I am working on that!
Their meetings are at the Wayne Middle School on the 2nd Monday at 7pm. Contact AJ0EY, Joey Sammons @ aj0ey@yahoo.com or 304-417-1695.
Lets all welcome and help out the Wayne County ARC! 73, Bob Adams W8GU, ARRL WV ACC
WEST VIRGINIA ARMY MARS:
West Virginia Army MARS needs a few good amateur radio operators. With over 5000 operators in our state, Army MARS only has eight operators! I would like to see at least 20 active Army MARS operators to support the Army MARS mission in West Virginia. If you are over 18 years old, can operate HF, are interested in emergency communications, and have a desire to serve your country and community with a commitment of 12 operating hours each quarter, then you are a prime candidate for West Virginia Army MARS. Please contact me with any questions. John Roberts/AAA3WV/West Virginia State Mars Director. wa4jr@hotmail.com

*Rick Jordan, KC8HFG, EC for Webster County reports he is still having good response with setting up emergency radios in the county. The class for obtaining ones amateur license begins on September 16 at the WMH at Webster Springs. The health department has received all of their equipment, and should be on the air soon.
* Fred Herr, WD8AGH, EC for Cabell County reports the Cabell ARES August meeting was held at St. Mary's Medical Center. Andrea Watson, RN, BSN Critical Care Educator and Chairperson for the Medical Center's Emergency Management Team, discussed how amateur radio could be utilized at the Medical Center during various situations. Also discussed was our equipment at the medical center and where we would operate it within the center. On September 6 Cabell County ARES and Tri-State Amateur Radio Association will be involved in an Emergency Preparedness Fair, sponsored by the Cabell-Huntington Health Department in association with National Preparedness Month.
* Pat Schaffner, KC8CSE, EC for Pocahontas County reports the Pocahontas group provided communications for 2 bike events. First the Greenbrier Challenge that used the Greenbrier River Trail from Seebert to Cloverlick and back had about 70 riders. Also the Cheat Mountain challenged with 2 routes, one about 109 miles and 75 miles. This event covered a large part of our county and presented challenges to the riders as well as the radio operators that provided communications. This event had more than 200 riders. This year there was a station set up in the 911 center with KC8ZRH monitoring the frequency for emergency traffic. He is a 911 dispatcher for the county. It was nice to have a direct link to the 911 center. 145.110,147.090,224.600 and 53.330 repeaters were utilized for these events. Thanks go to AEC N8KUK and Webster County. EC Rick,KC8HFG for their outstanding help.
* Shane Harper, KD8BMX, EC for Randolph County reports August 1, 2 we provided communications for the 3rd annual WV Auto Rally. Every thing went well. We had the same two repeaters on Saturday as we did last year, and they went down on us like they did last year. After a delay we were able to get set up with a relay station and continue the race. A couple of the Randolph County HAMS helped with the Barbour County Club at the Barbour County Fair. He attended the LEPC meeting and was informed of a meeting in Sept. to start planning for the Forest Festival Parade. The Forest Festival Parade is going to be Saturday October 4; I need HAMS to help with communications. Please let me know ASAP. 304-614-4528
* Jim Stephenson, KE8YB, EC for Raleigh County and DEC for District 7 reports Raleigh County ARES/RACES/Skywarn meeting was held on August 19, 2008 with 4 members attending. Planning for the 2008 SET was conducted. Next meeting September 16, 2008 at the Raleigh County 911/EOC starting at 7:00 PM. Training TBA. Signature: Tina A. Clark, Call sign: K8TAC
