Monthly Section News Summaries
Monthly Summary for June 2009
SAVE THE DATE: KY ARES STATE MEETING. If you have an interest in ARES or
emergency communications, you don't want to miss the Kentucky Section ARES
Conference set for Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009. The conference is open to all KY
ARES members and anyone with an interest in public service communications.
The conference location is the Nelson County Civic Center, 321 South Third
St., Bardstown, Ky. The conference will give emergency communicators an
opportunity to network, report what's going on in their district, and view
interesting presentations. Planning for the conference is still under way and
more details will be available soon.
WANTED: YOUR IDEAS. The SM and SEC are seeking your input on the planned
Kentucky Section ARES Conference. Do you have an idea for a presentation,
display or topic for discussion? Call or send your ideas and suggestions to
the Section Manager at ky4z@arrl.org, or call (502) 349-2099, or SEC Jim
McDonnell, W2LTB at w2ltb@arrl.net.
FIELD DAY THANK YOU. Thanks to all the Kentucky Section Field Day groups who
posted their sites on the ARRL Field Day Locator. By Field Day weekend a
total of 26 sites were listed. My XYL and I wish to express our appreciation
for the hospitality we received during the 2009 Section Manager's Field Day
Tour. Due to my wife's work schedule we were unable to hit as many sites as
originally planned, but it was a lot of fun putting an eyeball on the folks
I've talked to over the years.
KY YOUTH EARNS QCWA SCHOLARSHIP. For the first time in the group's history, a
young Kentucky Amateur Radio operator has been awarded a QCWA scholarship.
Earlier this month, John Soule, KG4WWE, son of Buddy, KC4WQ, and Tina Sohl,
of Shepherdsville was named a recipient of a $1,000 QCWA scholarship. John's
Dad, Buddy, has been active working with ham radio in the classroom at St.
Aloysius School in Shepherdsville, one of only two ham-radio-at-school
projects in the state. John was the first licensed ham in the project at St.
A. The Quarter Century Wireless Association (QCWA) scholarship program was
established in 1977. Since then the group has awarded more tha 300
scholarships to young Amateur Radio operators across the country.
Congratulations John!
HAMFEST REMINDER. Don't forget the Bluegrass Amateur Radio Society Hamfest on
Aug. 9th at the American Legion Post grounds in Lawrenceburg, Ky. Admission
is $5.00 each for advance tickets purchased before August 3, or $6.00 each at
the gate on the day of the Hamfest. Admission includes one Grand Prize stub
and the purchaser is eligible for the hourly door prize drawings. Children 12
years-of-age or younger are admitted free. VE testing, ARRL forums, silent
auction and more. For info: Jeanie Dalton, kb8qlc@arrl.net. See you there!
CALL TO ACTION: SUPPORT H.R. 2160. John Meyers, NB4K, Great Lakes Division
Legislative Action Chair, is asking all Kentucky Amateurs to write their
congressman to request support for H.R. 2160, The Amateur Radio Emergency
Communications Enhancement Act of 2009. If enacted, the bill would be a first
step toward providing Amateur Radio operators some sort of protection from
overly restrictive deeds and covenant. The bill does not automatically extend
PRB-1 to include these "CC&R's," but its an important move in that direction.
Amateurs are asked to e-mail or snail mail their Congressman to urge their
support for H.R. 2160. Sample letters are available on the ARRL Web site. For
more information, visit this story about H.R. 2160. U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie
(2nd-KY) is already a cosponsor of the legislation. If we all do our part, we
can help convince Kentucky legislators this is a worthwhile bill that needs
their support.
CLUB AFFILIATION REMINDER. Attention all ARRL-affiliated radio clubs! Keep
your affiliation current by updating your club records on the ARRL web site
at least once every two years. Club affiliation doesn't expire, however if
club records are not periodically updated your club listing will be moved to
inactive status, and your club listing won't show up when someone conducts a
search for Kentucky radio clubs. If your club has earned Special Service Club
(SSC) status, that too must be renewed every two years. For questions about
club affiliation, contact the SM or Affiliated Club Coordinator Jeanie
Dalton, KB8QLC.
BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION: VOLUNTEER! The Kentucky Section is packed with
talented and creative Amateurs whose skills are needed across the
Commonwealth. Are you active in ARES? Does your county have an Emergency
Coordinator? If not, would you like to serve in that capacity? Do you have an
interest in giving back to our communities as a volunteer? Contact your
county EC, District Emergency Coordinator or SEC Jim McDonnell, W2LTB for
information on being a communications volunteer.
