Monthly Summary for October 2009
NOVEMBER 2009 MISSOURI SECTION NEWS KØKY ARRL MO SM
NOTE: I HAD TO REMOVE 49 LINES FROM THIS NEWSLETTER SO IT WOULD FIT IN AN
E-MAIL FORMAT. IF YOU WANT TO READ THE UNREDUCED MO SECTION NEWS, I WOULD
RECOMMEND GOING TO THE MO SECTION PAGE WHERE THE ENTIRE NEWSLETTER IS
PRINTED.
November brings the season of Thanksgiving. I am very thankful to all
the volunteers that make the ARRL Missouri Section programs possible. I am
always impressed by the dedication and talent that Amateurs provide in
service to their Communities, State and the Amateur Radio Service. If you
look at the Missouri Traffic System, the ARES program, the Affiliated Club
program, the Official Observer program, the Technical Specialist program, and
the Public Information program, you will see outstanding accomplishments in
all areas. The effort of course doesn’t stop there because we also have the
B.E.A.R.S. who sponsor the MO QSO Party each year, the MVDXCC that sponsor
the Zero QSL Bureau, the Volunteer Examiners that keep adding to the ranks of
Amateur Radio, the on going volunteer effort of those promoting the 2 meter/
6 meter packet network for Missouri, and all the others that give so much to
promote and improve Amateur Radio in our state.
The Crisis Communications Conference hosted by the State Emergency
Management Agency of Missouri was held at the Embassy Suites in St. Charles,
MO. A highlight of the Conference were the presentations of Dennis Dura,
K2DCD, the ARRL Emergency Communications Director and Roger Volk, KØGOB, of
St. Louis Amateur Radio Emergency Group. They did an excellent job presenting
information about the role of Amateur Radio to the Emergency Management
personnel that attended the conference.
OCTOBER HAMFEST 2009 REPORT
Congratulations to Donna Quick,KBØYJN, and the hard working members of
the Southside ARC for their efforts this year. One of the highlights was the
presentation of the Herb Brier, W9CD Amateur Radio Instructor of the Year
Award to Brian Short, KCØBS. Brian has been involved in licensing over 500
new amateur radio operators in the past two and one half years.
Again this year, the Saint Louis Amateur Radio Club held their
Halloween Hamfest on at the Kirkwood Community Center in Kirkwood, MO. This
year’s event had a big increase in attendance and in vendor participation.
All the SLARC membership deserve a big pat on the back for a job well done.
2010 HAMFEST JANUARY
The next Hamfests that will be held in the Missouri Section will be
in January 2010. The Ozark Mountain Radio Group will be sponsoring their
annual Ozark Mountain Hamfest January 9th, 2010 at the Faith Lutheran Church
in Springfield, MO. For more information contact Connie Ballantyne, KB0ZSG

The St. Louis & Suburban Radio Club Winterfest is probably the
largest Hamfest sponsored by a Missouri Section Amateur Radio Club. The
Winterfest will be held January 30th, 2010 in Collinsville, IL at the Gateway
Convention Center. For more information about tables, tickets and vendor

AFFILIATED CLUB NEWS KEITH HAYE, WEØG, ACC
The Callaway Amateur Radio League, is justly proud of one of their
long time members accomplishments. Dick White, KSØM, has received a
“Certificate of Merit” in recognition of winning the CQ Magazine 2008
WORLD-WIDE DX Contest – CW Mode in the 10th Call Area on 20 meters. He
ranked #13 in North America and #9th in the United States. Not bad for an
experienced CW operator that just had his 83rd Birthday.
The Heart of America Radio Club had an interesting program at a
recent meeting. Phil Anderson, WØXI discussed the building of Crystal Radio
kits and then the members built a crystal radio at the meeting. Phil’s
program also included an explanation of the operation of ultrasonic receivers
and transceivers. Sounded like a really fun activity for a Amateur Radio
Club.
The Mid-MO Amateur Radio Club and the Warrensburg Area Amateur Radio
Club, combined forces again this year and sponsored the Halloween Special
Operating Event in Frankenstein, MO on October 31st. Many don't know that
Missouri is home to the only town in the United States named Frankenstein.
Its located about 30 minutes east of Jefferson City.
