Monthly Summary for October 2009
This report covers Mid October to mid November 2009.
It is with deep regret that we report the passing of Fred Benardella, KH6FI.
He was an active member of BIARC and a DXer. While he was active on almost
all bands, he especially favored six meters where he worked all states and 50
plus countries. He passed away Thursday November 12 at the Yukio Okutsu
State VA Home in Hilo where he died after a long bought with cancer. He was
64. Memorial service will be 6 pm Wednesday November 18 at the Puna
Congregational Church in Keaau in which he and his wife Helen were active.
He was first licensed in 1959 as WA2HFI and received KH6FI in August 2004.
EMCOMM:
At the moment the central Pacific doesn’t have any major storm activity
however a storm started in the Eastern Pacific and made is way across parts
of Central America, the Caribbean, some southern states and is finally
finishing by dumping its remnants across the eastern US. The message
is”stay prepared”.
ACTIVITIES:
The Marianas Amateur Radio Club is having its annual Christmas Party on
Saturday December 5th. The party is a potluck. The highlight of the evening
is the gift exchange. If you would like to participate, the suggested value
is around $15.00. Be as silly or serious as you want. Bring your family and
friends and spend the evening socializing. The party will be in place of the
December meeting. It will be at the KSTO Studio on Nimitz Hill at 6PM.

Marianas Amateur Radio Club K3UOC led the club in a discussion of the WH2M
initiative to lobby the Guam Legislature to exempt Ham Radio from the ban on
mobile communications devices. Let us hope they are successful. The
following were nominated to be officers of MARC in 2010: Mike Wendt, WH2M
and Ed Poppe, KH2L, for President; Bea Wendt, W9MRE and Mike Manafo, K3UOC,
for Vice President; Jason Springstead, AH2DT, for Secretary and Mike Sabin,
NH2MS, for Treasurer. The actual election will be either in December or
January.
While the Kauai Amateur Radio Club normally meets on the First Wednesday, for
November there were some changes. On Monday, November 2nd, elections were
held for Kauai ARC Officers for 2010. The new officers are: President; Jane
Goldsmith, NH7TZ; for Vice President; David Bown, WH7SI; for Secretary; Dick
Olsen, KH6DO, and for Treasurer; Bob Anderson, KH6AS. (*Note: Bown is
spelled correct.) The Kauai ARC offered a testing session for Technician,
General and Extra at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2009. Results: we
have three new Technicians, one person passed both the Tech and General and
one person upgraded to Extra Class. There is a special meeting on Monday,
November 16, 2009: 6-7:30 PM (New Time –Begins Promptly) Lihue Civic
Center--Meeting Room 2A/B Topic: Radio Operation on Battery Power. The
Kauai Amateur Radio Club will be having another presentation in the series of
informative topics for amateur radio operators. The November topic deals
with incorporating a battery as the source of power for your ham radio
station. Battery power is important component for your emergency
communications station. Learn about the various types of batteries, how they
impact the length of operation, the various charging methods and battery
safety. The EmComm Net is Every Thursday, night at 7:00 PM on 146.92 MHz and
146.70 MHz repeaters. This net is designed for the new amateur radio operator
but anyone is welcome to check in. For more info, click on < EmComm Net>

The Big Island Amateur Radio Club held their monthly meeting Saturday November
14th. It was very rainy however a Quorum showed up and elections were held.
The following were elected: President; Paul Ducasse, WH7BR; for Vice
President; Tom Thornton, AH6ZZ; for Secretary; Dave Broyles, KH7SO; and for
Treasurer; Curtis Knight, AH6RE. Board members were also elected: Two Year
Board - Ron Phillips, AH6HN; Bob Schneider, AH6J; Richard Darling, AH7G,
Peter Yoes, KH7HI; Rick Frazier, AH7H, and Lloyd Cabral, KH6LC. Remaining one
Year Board is - Beau Mills, NH7WV; Richard Fetchen, KH6WE; Kile Golden,
WH7FB; Elizabeth Yoes, WH7CU and Chuck Epperson, AH6SC. Barbara Darling
remains on the board automatically as Past President. BIARC will have their
Christmas party pot luck on Saturday December 12th at 2PM at the Keaau
Community Center with installation of new officers.

On Oahu this years Honolulu Marathon will be Sunday December 13, 2009 starting
at 5AM. It starts and ends at Kapiolani Park. Volunteers are needed at many
locations to help with communications. Contact Greg, NH6ZS, at his cell

The Hilo Amateur Radio Club will be operating Dec. 11, 12 & 13 at Laupahoehoe
Point using the club call KH6CC.
This is the time of year when many clubs hold their Christmas party. Please
let you SM know when your club’s party will be and please let your SM know
who the officers of each club will be for the coming year along with any
special meeting and activities.
As many of you know, the USS Missouri is in dry dock across the way at the
Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. She will spend several months there, getting
the hull repaired and the entire ship cleaned and painted from the topmast
down to the keel. During that time she will be closed to visitors and KH6BB
will be shut down.
There was a DXpedition to Midway Island on October 11 to 19. Check the
