US Power Squadrons Special Event Station at W1AW to promote Safe Boating Week

Sunday Videos Finally

Jun 8, 2008 15:17 ET
Katie Breen, W1KRB

Carlton Lee, W2PTZ presented both Joe and Katie with special certificates to recognize our participation this weekend

It seems with the power outage earlier, the software for our video escapades was affected. I just arrived a bit ago after working down at the TPC today in the 95 degree sun and heat with my other Jaycees and volunteers. So needless to say, you won't be seeing me on any video's today! But the Power Squadrons are cooking away here today and have now surpassed their record for the 2006 Special Event Station.

Now that I have the keyboard, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the Power Squadrons for being such great friends and for the special recognition that they gave to Joe and I last night. We'll upload those pics soon.

Stay tuned and keep making those QSOs!

73 for the rest of the day!

W1AW is QRV!!!

Please look for us at:

3870
7290
14294

That's all in kilocycles! :-))

As soon as 17 meters opens up, look for us around 18160 kHz. Same goes for 6 meters, 'cept we may be around 50130 kHz.

Over!

Oh, and BTW we're back on regular utility power. Whew!

A new day!

Good morning everyone!

So, here's the story: I'm in early, making coffee, getting the stations up and running again for another fun day of operating by members of the US Power Squadron...when suddenly...

A loud boom in the near distance (near distance--how can it be near when it's in the distance?). The lights drop out for a few seconds. UPSs throughout W1AW start to beep...and then my generator kicks on! (And, the beeping stopped!)

It seems that Newington has yet again suffered one of its *many* power failures. There is a substation not too far from us. It's located near a pond. Sometimes a stray duck or goose (or two, or three) will inadvertantly fly into the gated area...and...well, you know the rest! Either that, or the substation couldn't handle the load being placed on it, given the heat and humidity we're experiencing. Or, it's aliens!

Either way, our Kohler 60kW started as planned. The station will be on the air as it should. Of course, there will be that time when regular utility power is restored and I have to restart a few systems once the generator shuts down. But I'm used to it! :-)

Have a fun day!

See you on the air! (Well, not actually me. Rather, members of the US Power Squadron!)

We're QRT for now...

Thanks folks!
