I recently graduated from the Level III on-line class and wish to become a Mentor/Instructor so I can offer a local Hybrid class. What do I need to do now?
Simply send your request for the short Mentor Familiarization Package to cce@arrl.org. Once you've completed the exercises as indicated, we will be notified. At that time, we will add you to our list of registered CCE Mentors for that course, and issue your Mentor email alias. Only registered CCE Mentors or permitted to conduct Hybrid classes.
How does a "Hybrid" class compare with a "traditional" classroom class?
The traditional classroom course is one where all students and Instructors meet at a specific location at appointed times to receive in-person training. Students (ARRL and non-members) are then required to attend a locally-administered Certification Exam Session to take the final exam.
With the "Hybrid" class, students ((ARRL members ($45.00) and non-members ($75.00)) are enrolled all at one time by collecting checks from each student and submitting a roster and the checks to ARRL CCE. This roster template is found at http://www.arrl.org/cce/forms/. Students will receive all instruction via a combination of on-line, on-the-air, and live in-person tutoring, then return to a computer to take the final exam on-line. Instruction is done by a local Mentor/Instructor.
Is it true that the "Hybrid" class is easier to manage and administer than the "traditional" class?
Yes. There are several reasons for this. First, the Mentor/Instructor controls registrations locally. (See the Hybrid Class Registration Form at http://www.arrl.org/cce/forms/.) Also, there is no need to schedule a Certification Exam Session -- which requires exam materials be sent back and forth in the mail -- because these students will take the final exam on-line using the standard examination generating and grading software included in the on-line course. Finally, there are no time delays or backlogs normally seen with the traditional exam materials being processed by ARRL staff.
How do we handle the course books for our Level I Hybrid class students?
Mentor/Instructors may order printed Level I course books on-line or using a credit card over the phone (1-888-277-5289). Be sure to order Item #8462-R. The "dash-R" indicates that these multiple books are for instructional use. No Shipping & Handling will be charged on this order.
The alternative is for students to order their own books. They would then be shipped directly to the student eliminating the need for book fees to be handled by the Mentor/Instructor. However, individual students will be charged shipping and handling.
How do I register my Hybrid class?
Go to the Activity Registration Web Page and fill in all the blanks. Then complete and download the Hybrid Class Registration Form (at http://www.arrl.org/cce/forms/). Follow the instructions to gather the information and checks from your students and send everything to ARRL as instructed. Please remember - we must receive the Hybrid class roster at least 2 weeks before the class is to start.
I'm already a Certification Instructor and have instructed a "Traditional" class locally. Can I now teach a "Hybrid" class?
Requirements and criteria for CM, CI and CE are found on-line. If you meet all the requirements for a CM, you're set to go.
I'm preparing a Hybrid class for my area and want to include more information about ARES-related activities specific to my area. What flexibility do I have with the Student Activities in the course?
Another excellent question. The course material and related Student Activities have been gathered and produced by EmComm experts all over our great country. They've been developed in a generic format as a baseline for general widespread use. Mentor/Instructors are encouraged to use whatever methods and tools work best for them. The bottom line is that students should comprehend the lesson material and receive adequate hands-on experience essential -- and crucial -- to being prepared for local activation.
