ARRL In Action: What Have We Been Up to Lately?
In the ARRL's annual elections, two new Vice Directors were elected: Kermit Carlson, W9XA, in the Central Division and Jim Boehner, N2ZZ, in the Roanoke Division.
Ten incumbent Section Managers -- three of whom faced opposition -- will keep their posts for another two year term.
The ARRL Development Office began the last part of the Spectrum Defense campaign. The ARRL uses the money raised for this fund to defend the Amateur Radio frequencies.
The City of Manassas, Virginia looks to end BPL to residential and commercial subscribers. The ARRL has opposed BPL in this community since its inception due to harmful interference it causes to the radio amateurs.
The ARRL announced that it had teamed up with a software developer to provide a new suite of Amateur Radio mobile software designed specifically for use with the Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch.
ARRL Regulatory Information Manager Dan Henderson, N1ND, and ARRL General Counsel Chris Imlay, W3KD, participated in a Webinar to discuss the issues behind, and the reasoning for, the ARRL's recent report, The Commercialization of Amateur Radio: The Rules, The Risks, The Issues. The Webinar was hosted by ARRL Atlantic Division Director Bill Edgar, N3LLR.
The ARRL Contest Branch sent out the certificates and plaques for the 2009 ARRL RTTY Roundup. They also report that they have received 1713 logs for the phone portion of the 2009 ARRL November Sweepstakes and 1523 logs for the CW portion.
The ARRL Headquarters Incident Management Team was placed on alert to support activity during Tropical Storm Ida. ARES® groups in the Mississippi, Louisiana, Northern Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, Virginia, Delaware and Southern New Jersey sections were also active.
The organizing committee of the Global Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Conference (GAREC) announced that its 2010 meeting will take place October 11-12 on the Dutch island of Curacao in the Caribbean. All hams interested in Emergency Communications are invited to attend.
In November, four more Congressional Representatives -- André Carson (D-IN-7), Michael McMahon (D-NY-13), Aaron Schock (R-IL-18) and C.W. Bill Young (R-FL-10) -- pledged their support for HR 2160, The Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Enhancement Act of 2009, bringing the total number of cosponsors to 33, including original sponsor Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX-18).
Along with WA6ZTY on the West Coast and K5CM in Oklahoma, W1AW, the Hiram Percy Maxim Station, conducted the 2009 Fall Frequency Measuring Test.
During the 2009 Jamboree on the Air (JOTA), Boy Scouts from Newington activated W1AW.
The winner of the QST Cover Plaque Award for November is A. Robert Patzlaff, W9JQT, for his article "The Rockless, a VFO Controlled Low Power Transceiver."
A new ARRL title -- Antenna Designer's Notebook by Brian V. Cake, KF2YN (ex-GA8FH) -- was released to the printer. The January 2010 issue of QST was also released to the printer.
Just in time for the holidays, the ARRL is offering two new products: a keepsake holiday ornament and a pocket reference guide.
