Gant, W5GM, of Ardmore, Oklahoma, died December 6. He was 84. Gant served as West Gulf Division Vice Director from 1972 to 1976 and as Director from 1977 to 1980. Licensed for 66 years, Gant was an ARRL member and formerly held the call sign W5EGR. He belonged to the Quarter Century Wireless Association. In the 1970s, Gant was active in ARES as Emergency Coordinator for Carter County. An independent oilman, he also held a private pilot's license. Gant also once served as chairman for the Texhoma Hamarama hamfest. ARRL Executive Vice President David Sumner, K1ZZ, remembered Gant ''as a real gentleman.'' ARRL President Jim Haynie, W5JBP, said Gant mentored him when Haynie first joined the Board as West Gulf Director in 1982. ''He gave me a lot of good advice,'' Haynie said. ''He was a good advisor and a nice guy who was well-liked on the Board.'' A service is set for Saturday, December 9, 2 PM at the First Presbyterian Church, Ardmore, Oklahoma. NNNN /EX
