Solar activity took an unexpected upward turn last week.  The trend
is expected to continue, with the solar flux rising to about 92
around January 23, and then dropping to a low around 75 during the
first week of February.  A recurring coronal hole is currently
causing a disturbance.  This is expected to quiet down between
January 26 through 28, and then create unsettled conditions again
around January 30.  Another quiet period is expected February 4
though 11, with more unsettled conditions by mid month.
 
Sunspot Numbers for January 5 through 11 were 25, 25, 11, 12, 0, 13
and 12, with a mean of 14.  10.7 cm flux was 76.3, 74.4, 74.7, 73.7,
73.8, 73.3 and 75.3, with a mean of 74.5.
 
Sunspot Numbers for January 12 through 18 were 23, 13, 17, 18, 30,
53 and 57, with a mean of 30.1.  10.7 cm flux was 76.2, 74.9, 77.3,
80.6, 82.8, 83.5 and 86.6, with a mean of 80.3.
 
The path projections for this week are from Los Angeles and Boston
to Japan.
 
>From Southern California, expect 80 meters to be open from 0730 to
1530z, and 40 meters from 0630 to 1630.  30 meters should be good
from 0500 to 1830 and 20 meters from 2130 to 0200.  Check 17 meters
from 2200 to 0130, and 15 meters from 2230 to 0030.  12 meters
should be good most days from 2230 to 0000, and 10 meters may be
open some days around 2300 to 2330.
 
>From Massachusetts check 80 meters from 0800 to 1230z and 40 meters
from 0700 to 1400 and again around 2100 to 2200.  30 meters should
be good from 0530 to 0900, 1330 to 1700 and 2030 to 2300.  20 meters
may be open some days around 0700 and on a few days around 1400 to
0000.
